Open positions

The Research Training Group (Graduiertenkolleg) 1459 invites applications for 7 Ph.D. positions

The Research Training Group is a joint initiative of the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE), the Christian-Albrechts-University Kiel and the Bernhard-Nocht-Institute for Tropical Diseases and focuses on selected model proteins to investigate basic mechanisms of the biogenesis of intracellular compartments under pathological conditions.
The topics of the Ph.D. theses will be i) the role of the Golgi apparatus and endosomes in sorting and transport of plasma membrane and lysosomal proteins, ii) interactions between cytosolic and membrane proteins, and iii) responses of cells infected by bacteria or pathogens.

The three-year Ph.D. program is conducted in an international environment and provides multidisciplinary scientific training in modern medical cell biology. Students connect and broaden individual Ph.D. projects by resident and guest scientists, lecture clubs, lab and soft-skill courses, participation in symposia and laboratory exchange programs. The program is taught in English (for details see www.grk1459.de).

Young scientists with outstanding qualifications and a Master’s or diploma degree (biochemistry, biology, microbiology or related disciplines) are invited to apply for the Ph.D. program. We are looking for highly-motivated candidates who have an active interest in intracellular imaging techniques. Experiences in laser scan or TIRF microscopy or related imaging approaches are advantageous. English skills are required and international applicants are welcome.

Deadline for applications is January 31, 2011. Participants will be selected on a competitive basis which includes a Selection Symposium at the end of March. The GRK1459 and the UKE are equal opportunity employers. The Ph. D. positions are available between May and July, 2011. Please visit our website (www.grk1459.de) for further information:
